Law enforcement in Ventora is, generally, the purview of the duchies. Nonetheless, Ventora maintains some national-level agencies with law enforcement responsibilities, notably the Gendarmerie.

National-level law enforcement[edit | edit source]

At the national level, the Governance and Interior Commissions each administer certain law enforcement responsibilities.

Gendarmerie[edit | edit source]

The Gendarmerie Corps (Ventoran: Cuerpo de Gendarmería), commonly Gendarmería, is the national gendarmarie of Ventora. Although technically part of the armed forces, it is overseen by the Interior Commission during peacetime. Its primary responsibility is border security, including patrolling land and coastal borders, airports, and seaports. Originally founded as the Royal Guard, today's Gendarmerie provides protection for the head of state and official residences, other senior governmental officials, and government buildings.

As part of the military service, the Gendarmerie also provides law enforcement for the military services, including security of military installations. Its unique capabilities also facilitate the Gendarmerie in providing diplomatic security, both in Ventora and abroad. Similarly, the Gendarmerie is trained and equipped to provide provide a quick response force to support police in the duchies and municipalities.

The Gendarmerie is Ventora's only nationwide general law enforcement service. It has authority to enforce all laws within the country, although it focuses on its primary responsibilities and roles.
